ROUND 1 WRAP
After a gruelling summer of differing fortunes, some of us have tried to take our game to the next level, while others just left the sticks in the bag and chose to rely on their natural ability to get them through the first round of the year.Portsea was the venue and once again we were blessed with some pretty good weather to kick the season off.
A few numbers down on last year, but plenty of time to recruit more members so get onto it lads! We had 8 new members join us for the year so far, including a new female member which we're stoked to have on board. From all reports MUSAFUSA (must be said in a Muttley voice) had a ball and the boys looked after her as far as etiquette goes, but gave her a hiding in the competition. Don't worry lads, she'll take a few points from you over the course of the season!
Group 1 saw STOCKY rise to the top, narrowly beating TD by a measly 2 points. It was tough to score outright points which is exactly what we want!
G2 saw the reigning champ GAZZA put on a clinic with some phenomenal driving. NIEVVY thought he had it worked out but it's very clear that he's only any good on the driving range.
G-MAN was a bit of surprise winner in G3, beating some of his more fancied opponents with some stellar golfing. He's known as a serial good starter to Explosion seasons, let's see if he can maintain that winning form.
MUSAFUSA was the first female to play Explosion since MILLIE and CHARLIE used to don the shirts waaaay back in the day, but it was tough going up against BOMBER and HAWKA in Group 4 who had 102 and 78 points respectively. Chin up lass, you'll be right!
Group 5 was a bit of a massacre! New member DANO tore the group apart and scored a massive 124 points with daylight for second. He also won the Stableford comp with 37 points playing off 10 and seems to be the one to watch in these early stages. One talking point was BULLETS smashing out the Longest Drive, but other than that they were all pretty woeful. Sorry lads.
G6 was a pretty tight affair with CHEEKY just getting the points from SNIBO. All the extra work at JD's Golf Studio in Mordialloc must be paying off, I think we should sniff out a sponsorship opportunity there!
G7 was another pretty good contest, with YOUNGY pulling away at the end to win by 26 points over A.A.RON and HAYDO who tied for second.
G8 saw INDIRECT DREW (still not sure what that name means) take the points over MUZZA who needs a lesson in filling out scorecards at the very least.
G9 was our only group of 3, and it was JAWS who pulled away with a nice win here over BRENO and J-RO. J-RO's dad is believed to be flying in from London each month to participate, such was the excellent time he had!
G10 and it was KENNY G who got the points over WOODY who has decided that golf is too easy to play right handed and has switched to left handed over the summer. Very admirable, and he did alright too scoring 58 points. Better than moi, that's for sure..
G11 and it was JDUB in another closely fought group just holding out THYLACINE, BIRDY and the 6 foot 3 HAEMORROID who finished last in this group. Disappointing by him.
G12 was another good grouping with it pretty tight at the top. MARZ got the job done though over good mate STIX and newcomer BIG NIGE who managed to top a ball really close to the hole on 7 for a CTP. Nice work.
G13 and it was TUCKY who dominated with 93 points. It's probably enough to see him into G1 next round which is rarified air indeed.
G14 and it was new boy RATZY who scored the third tonne of the day with an impressive 102 over JB, KARA and GUS and this will surely see him in the top group next round.

ROUND 2 WRAP
So who would've predicted that Round 2 down at the wonderful Rosebud Country Club would end up being the last round of golf that many of us would play for the best part of 10 weeks!
It was another cracking day as far as weather was concerned, and there was some pretty solid golf being played too. Rosebud CC was in amazing condition as always, and the greens are some of the best in Victoria which as we all know, has some of (most of) the best courses in the country.
This would also be our last shotgun start for a while, so it was an 8am start for all, and the day went a little something like this...
After winning the 2019 title, GAZZA has asserted his authority early on in the 2020 season and managed to ease out an incredible 140 points in Group 1 against some pretty handy golfers. It was enough for the Round Win, and after two rounds finds himself ensconced at the top of the table.
TD had a day out, and if it were not for some iffy putting could've had an even better day. While he fired it to within a few feet on the 4th for an impressive Closest to Pin, he also matched his finesse with some braun and smashed out the Longest Drive too. Although he probably owes a jug for forgetting to write his name on the marker. Impressive nonetheless, and something that may have only been done once or twice before. Probs needs to check with the stats guy...
A few blokes managed to get to triple figures, with HAWKA in G2 getting 109, SHANO in G5 getting 121.5 in a group of 3, CJ smashing out 122 in G6, MR TRAMPOLINE knocking out 113 in G7, BULLETS took advantage of a good draw to get to 106 in Group 10 and BARBZ in Group 14 easing out a 109 to round off the big scores of the day.
KILLER almost got over the line in G8 after NIEVVY took a commanding lead, and with 4 holes to play and a 45+ point deficit, he actually managed to have a putt to win on the last. But cool heads prevailed and NIEVVY got the win by 6 points in the end. Inspirational stuff...
STABLEFORD COMP:
While CJ was pretty awesome in Group 6, he was also pretty awesome in general as he managed 40 Stableford points off 9 for a 5-over score for the day. BIRDY, NUGI and GAZZA all had 36 points and shared the spoils for 2nd place. For their efforts, CJ wins $55, while the guys that shared in second all get $20 each.
NEXT ROUND:
Next round was to be at Moonah Links on the Open course but with the COVID-19 situation in play we'll most likely reschedule dates/venues to suit. Stay tuned.

ROUND 3 WRAP
Round 3 was a looooong time coming! After COVID lockdowns forced the temporary shutdown of our beloved pastime, some behind-the-scenes wheeling and dealing finally saw us tee off at the magnificent Thirteenth Beach down at Barwon Heads.
With no shotgun starts allowed yet, we had a one tee start with 8 minute breaks and it appears the early tee times got the better conditions as the wind picked up later on.
In Group 1 GAZZA once again dominated a very strong group to have 107 points and is even further ensconced on the top of the leaderboard!
It wasn't quite enough for a second consecutive round win, as TBAG feasted down in G11 to the tune of 112 points, just edging out a flukey FRECKLE who got VERY LUCKY to have 111. DUCK was the only other bloke to reach triple figures with 105 down in Group 9.
STIX muscled a long drive down on the 14th that was able to stand for the majority of the day, while ol' sleepy MUZZA put his tee shot on 7 to within a few feet of glory and held on for the Closest to Pin in tricky conditions.
In other groups:
- OMAR held on for a win in a very strong group in G2
- SQUIRT dominated G3 in another strong group with 94 points
- BULLETS in G4 almost got to 100 for the second round running, while BOMBER was most disappointing
- TD continued his great form and if it were not for some iffy putting (again) could have really taken G5 to town
- FRECKLE has been mentioned, but it was more the poor form of the rest of the group (myself included) in g6 that flattered his score
- BURNEY is making a charge with a solid 95 in G7 and will probably find himself playing up a few groups next round
- DOOKS had the better of CHEEKY, A.B and a confused WOODY who isn't sure whether he should be playing left or right handed at the moment
- DUCK tonned up while MOONBURN who is all talk and no game only managed 39
- G10 pleases me as our solitary female member (MUSAFUSA) for 2020 cleaned up a couple of current/former Sandhurst members to take the win with 84 points
- G11 featured the round winner TBAG who should be ashamed of himself being in a group that low! Haha, a win is a win though and you take them no matter how you get them!
- G12 was the debut group as all members played their first round of the year, including a new member in IRISH DAN. GOATAS got the win though in the group of 3, hope to see you boys again at the next round.
STABLEFORD RESULTS
Tough conditions off the blue tees saw NOBODY play to their handicap. But we all had to endure them and the WOMAN that endured them best was MUSAFUSA with a winning score of 34 points. It was enough to win the day and earn herself a $60 pay cheque! STIX came second and gets $25, while third place was split 4 ways with MR TRAMPOLINE, GAZZA, OMAR and FRECKLE all scoring 32 points and earning $5 each.

ROUND 4 WRAP
So the first (or second) of our catch up rounds happened over the weekend and the much coveted Curlewis Golf Club.
While we got unlucky with some pretty substantial roadworks on the way down to Port Arlington, we got blessed with absolutely perfect golfing weather, and you'd take that every day of the week no doubt.
GAZZA was looking at leaving with at least one hand on the Crowedog Shield with another strong performance in Group 1, and he didn't disappoint. He was able to knock out 79 points to maintain his lead in overall points to 73 over second place OMAR. It didn't all go his way though as YOUNGY put his hand up for Shot of the Day honours when he eagled the par 4 9th to a very tough pin to deny GAZZA of any points there.
G2 saw OMAR clean up, falling just short of a tonne that would have left FRECKLE somewhat embarrassed after the amount of banter that would occur before the round. OMAR also put his big boy shoes on and spanked Longest Drive down 12, getting HAWKA on the fly and putting an end to that discussion.
G3 was a fairly tight group, with BURNEY getting Closest to Pin honours on the 8th, MR TRAMPOLINE grabbing 3 birdies in a row but only taking 18 points away for his efforts as CJ grabbed an eagle on 12 on his way to a group win.
G4 saw STOCKY go to town in a pretty strong group and almost did enough to get the round win. 107 points is very solid, and he once again showed his prowess in his Explosion hole getting maximum points AGAIN. TD had a nightmare on the greens, and probably could've snuck home if not for that.
G5 was the highest scoring group of the round, with NIEVVY and SNIBO both getting maximum points in their Explosion holes. It was NIEVVY and DANO though that shared the points with 78 apiece, while BOMBER was very disappointing while also sporting quite the lego head.
G6 was a fairly tight group too, but it was SUPERSOFT WATERBOMB who got the job done after he too maxed out his Explosion hole and won by 18 points over MUZZA.
G7 saw something that doesn't happen all too often and that was T-BAG getting back to back Round Wins with 111 points and a new average that will have him back in the higher groups where he belongs. MUSAFUSA couldn't continue her run of good form as T-BAG was just a little too dominant on the day.
G8 was another tight group with very similar golfers all teeing up together. NUGI got the chocolates though by 8 points over J-RO with KILLER and CHEEKY just falling a little bit further back.
G9 was interesting. INDIRECT DREW and WARDY both tied with 84 points, IRISH DAN was 30 points back with 54 but the talking point would be ROOBUS with his big fat donut giving him an average that will surely see him topple down the group rankings.
G10 and it was MOONBURN who had it all to do after parring the first hole and thinking he was going to have a day out. Turned out to be a horrific scene as he struggled against the MONEY MAN and STIX who took turns to beat both MOONY and RATZY to pulp.
G11 saw DOZZA and GREENIE play together for the 3rd time this year through 4 rounds, and will probably get stuck with each other again as only WOODY sits between them and their averages. Whatever the case, GAZMAN took them to school and had a pretty convincing win in the end.
G12 saw BIRDY take the cake in a group of 3 with a very solid 76.5 falling an agonising 2 points shy of collecting the $20 off NIEVVY. GUS and DORSAL hung in there but the BIRDMAN was too good on the day.
G13 saw another group of 3 take the field and all play their first round of the year. This means that the both HENSLER and GIANGIAN will have some high averages going into R5, and may have their work cut out for them!
STABLEFORD COMP
CJ got his second Stableford comp win of the year with a commanding 39 points and a pretty hefty drop of his handicap too. BULLETS and FRECKLE also had solid rounds shooting better than nett par, while WARDY and STOCKY also managed to get out to 36 points apiece to keep them honest. MOONBURN gets the naga and probably owes beers for only managing an insipid 20 points off 20. I'm positive he can reverse his form though, I've seen him do it. It can be done!
NEXT ROUND
Sandhurst Club will host us on the Champs course on Sunday July 5, gateways are open and we're looking forward to entering the second half of the season and watching the leaderboard do its funky things before we head into the final. ROUND 5 WRAP
How good is golf in winter? Yeah not great, let's be honest.
Round 6 saw us head to Sandhurst Club and return the Champions course which we hadn't been to in around 8-9 years. The course was pretty wet due to the amount of rain that fell in the few days prior, however the course held up really well in the bits that you want it to. The fairways were very playable and the greens were lightning quick which probably surprised a few of us out there expecting them to play pretty slow.
We had a couple of late notice withdrawals which is always a bit frustrating, especially when it comes to predictions within the groups! So just under 50 competed for the points which leading into the back half of the season become more and more important for final rankings.
BULLETS had another day out knocking out 114 for the Round Win and also managed to take advantage of the finer afternoon weather, just nudging it past NIEVVY on the Longest Drive hole.
BURNEY had his irons tuned in again and got a second consecutive Closest to Pin on the 16th. But, he wasn't able to convert his birdie putt for the second consecutive round either so here's some constructive feedback, work on your putting! (Yes, the author is very aware of his own putting weaknesses and is taking his own advice very seriously).
The Stableford comp was tied between BULLETS and STIX who both played to their handicaps and had 36 points. Good work!
G1 - A pretty tight affair in the upper echelons of Explosion, GOATAS got off to a flyer with a chip-in birdie on the 1st in a very tough pin position. It was OMAR though who managed to just squeeze out GAZZA by 6 points in the end. Birdie count: 8
G2 - Another tough group, especially given the experience of CJ is very hard to contain at times. HENSLER forfeited his bond at his place by cutting a hole in the floor and using laser levels to dial in his putting. Not sure if it was a success or not, but given CJ dominated with SQUIRT not far behind, I'll just have to put it down to a work in progress. Birdie count: 0
G3 - I think a few of us were surprised with how good SPUD is at golf, given his name. But he proved himself to be a very solid golfer with a convincing win in G3. HAWKA and TBAG tried valiantly, however FRECKLE didn't really show up so it was really a race between 3. HAWKA did however birdie the 6th which is a great result on any day! Birdie count: 1
G4 - The crowds flocked to this grouping, but with GIANGIAN pulling out it meant we played for 9 points. MR TRAMPOLINE was up to his usual tricks (see ball, hit ball straight, make putts) which was a pretty good game plan to go out with. Par would be enough to win most holes, there were too many bogeys though between TD and NIEVVY and a lot of points given to the Asian Sensation. Birdie count: 3
G5 - Well, there was a lot of jabber in this group and it probably came with good reason. A clean sweep with BULLETS winning the Round, Longest Drive and a joint win in the Stableford comp and BURNEY winning the CTP. DANO couldn't get himself up to force any reasonable competition and YOUNGY went missing too, so BULLETS and BURNEY shared 206 points between them! Birdie count: 1
G6 - Another late withdrawal from SUPERSOFT SPONGEFOOT WATERBOMB meant reduced points for this group. G-MAN was solid and got to a great start parring the first 4 holes which gave him a nice buffer for the rest of the day. WARDY challenged and only finished 1 hole behind, while the MONEY MAN played valiantly enough to hold onto third spot. Birdie Count: 0
G7 - Poor old MARZ probably wishes he didn't get out of bed for this one, but I'm sure he had fun regardless! SHANO got the win but almost let SNIBO catch him in the end who fell an agonising 6 points short. CICC didn't win the group but was still basking in a fantastic Bombers win against those insipid Magpies and will take that as a win any day. Birdie count: 0
G8 - Another group of 3 after J-RO pulled the pin, and it was MUZZA who got the job done here. Couple of high scores won the holes here so I think J-RO missed a good opportunity here! A.A. RON and INDIRECT DREW put up a pretty good fight but couldn't get the job done in the end. Birdie count: 0
G9 - BOMBER was predicted to score pretty heavily in this group but ended up finishing last which was a real disappointment to the entire field. DOOKS took his positive energy and turned it into a win, with JAWS and JDUB duking it out til the end. The less said about BOMBER the better. V Smelly, don't do it again. Birdie count: 0
G10 - STIX continued his good form with a Stableford win (36 points) and a group win in G10. MUSAFUSA snagged a birdie on 7, and it was enough to get her a second place just in front of GAZMAN and DURAN DURAN. Birdie Count: 1
G11 - CHEEKY was far too strong in this group and almost did enough to get the round win. He was definitely good enough to get to 110 points and might have set himself up for failure next round against NIEVVY. IRISH DAN and AB couldn't quite do enough to curtail the rampaging CHEEKY but a good time was had by all. Birdie count: 0
G12 - MOKBEL forgot to show up for the back 9, which gave GREENIE every opportunity to pounce, and pounce he did turning a 22.5 point deficit into a very convincing 45 point win. DOZZA did enough to finish behind both, he's better than this so expect to see an improvement next round. Birdie count: 0
G13 - No stroke scores kept in this group, but it was a tied event with both RATZY and DORSAL tieing for the win. JB finished strong but couldn't quite get there in the end. Birdie count: 0
G14 - The final group saw a tight tussle between GUS and LENCH with only 4.5 points separating the two at the end. GUS got the job done, but more importantly it was ROOBUS who scored his first points on the second hole of the day. I'm sure this was a massive relief after a bit of spell between points! Birdie count: 0
Thanks to everyone for making the effort in trying conditions, Round 6 will be at the Dunes and will be a MIDDAY round on JULY 26. Gateway is open, make your commitments early so I don't hassle you too much.
